Faster Internet service: Swisscom increases VDSL bandwidths

October 10, 2007, Swisscom Fixnet Wholesale is increasing the transmission speeds of its VDSL broadband services for residential and business customers to up to 20,000 kbps (downstream). From mid-November 2007, VDSL Internet customers will automatically be able to take advantage of the increased bandwidths.
There is a growing demand for higher bandwidths for transferring the data required for multimedia content. Swisscom Fixnet Wholesale is therefore stepping up its VDSL offering as of 12 November 2007.
The new maximum 20,000/1,000 kbps offering is available to more than 75% of households in Switzerland and around half of these customers take advantage of the full bandwidth. Bandwidths will be increased automatically between 12 and 16 November 2007. Existing VDSL customers of the Internet Service Provider need not do anything.
In the summer of 2007, Swisscom Fixnet Wholesale introduced the first VDSL offerings for residential and business customers. VDSL is considered the successor to ADSL and is the future technology in the broadband business.
High usage thanks to intense competition between the infrastructures
Switzerland is among the international leaders when it comes to current broadband usage. These extremely high usage statistics are also attributable to intense competition among alternative infrastructures offered by cable network operators competing on the Swiss market: For years Swisscom Fixnet Wholesale has been selling its DSL services throughout Switzerland via a network of around 30 competing Internet Service Providers. The entire range of services including the VDSL offering covers a comprehensive spectrum of broadband solutions to meet the varying needs of residential and business customers.
