24.09.2005, Valor Econômino Journal - Carolina Mandl from São Paulo.

The agriculture sector and the industries in general are not the only ones who are increasing their gains with Brazilian exports, but the 34% growth that was registered in Brazilian external sales until last August is also increasing the weight of companies that certify the shipped merchandise.

Those are companies such as the Swiss SGS, the British BSI and the Norwegian DNV, among others. They verify that the imported & exported Brazilian products to certify that these are following the quality standards which their clients demand. If the goods certified by them receive their authorization, they flow easily afterwards until their destination. Thus, the more Brazil exports, the more the certification companies also expand their revenues and profits.

Until August of this year , SGS do Brasil revenue followed the evolution of external sales closely. It grew 36%, which will catapult the company to an annual income of approximately R$100 million, compared to R$74 million in 2003. In 2002, the company’s revenue was R$40 million.

These results lead Maurice Politi, SGS’s Brazilian President, to believe that the company’s revenue will double in two years. According to him, the segment that grew the most this year was the mineral sector with 80% growth , most of it led by their client CVRD -Vale do Rio Doce Company.

The agricultural area is still the most significative for the company for it represents 33% of its business. But Politi’s mission is also to make the consumer products certification grow for items like shoes, toys and textiles, which have not been well exploited. “The exportation of those items has been growing in Brazil, and we must go with the flow”, assures Politi.

Politi is the first Brazilian to command SGS in his country. 24 years after beginning his career in SGS do Brasil , he travelled around in many countries always at the service of the company having been located in different countries such as Peru,Kenia, Mexico and Argentina. In May this year, he assumed the command of the company in Brasil, returning to his home country . “Now after having traveled through countries and seen different export items, I want to apply all this knowledge to Brazil," he said to our reporter

Other worldwide giants are also eyeing the Brazilian exportation wave. The English BSI for instance, which happens to work with management system certifications only. They have decided that as from next year on, they will begin also certifying goods and merchandise.

“The Certification process is Brazil’s greatest leverage for the external market. When a product is recognized, it is because of its quality, and the customers’ eyes are set upon that”, says Sérgio Constantino, responsible for the creation of that new department at BSI. The company is interested in foods, oil, gas, medical and chemical areas. According to Constantino, BSI’s idea is to use the company’s inspection laboratory in Santos Port (SP) which actually inspects products solely. BSI cannot yet measure how much this new activity will contribute to increase its global revenue in Brazil.

For DNV, who reached a revenue of R$55 million in 2003, the most important areas have been foods and oil certifications. “Importers are more worried about food suppliers hygiene, and what kind of fertilizer they use”, says director Samuel Barbosa.

Bureau Veritas representative believes that a greater demand must come from the food sector, after having started on it two years ago. Today, the greatest growth comes from the electronics area which must follow specifications so as to be allowed to enter a country.
