Swisscom launches Hotspot Locator for the iPhone

November 06, 2009, Swisscom is launching an iPhone application for its customers: the Hotspot Locator shows the closest of Swisscom's 1300 public WLAN locations. Customers who wish to benefit from surfing speeds of up to 20 Mbp/s while on the move can quickly and easily find hotspots in train stations, hotels and other public places. The Swisscom iPhone application is available from 5 November and can be downloaded free of charge from the App Store and iTunes.
The Hotspot Locator shows the user the nearest five to ten hotspots either in graphic form on an extract from Google Maps or as a list with name, address and distance. The iPhone location services must be activated. The customer can then quickly and easily access a public WLAN nearby.
The application can also identify hotspots in other locations. If a customer is planning a trip, they can search for hotspots simply by entering the name of the location or the postcode. This search also works without an Internet connection because the data are stored in the application. With the new iPhone operating system 3.0, the device can even dial up to the Internet automatically at hotspots using EAP-SIM technology. This luxury is available exclusively from Swisscom.
