01.07.2009, Ulrich Kohli, Deputy Head of Department I and Chief Economist of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), will take early retirement as of the end of December 2009. It is with regret that the Governing Board of the SNB has taken note of this decision. With the departure of Ulrich Kohli, the SNB is losing an internationally recognised expert on monetary policy and macroeconomics. His contacts with the authorities participating in the monetary policy decision-making process abroad and with research have been of great value to the SNB.

Ulrich Kohli (born 1948) entered the services of the SNB for the first time on 1 September 1983 as a Research Advisor. Two years later he left the National Bank to take up a position as Professor at the University of Geneva. In 2001, he returned to the SNB as Alternate Member of the Governing Board and Chief Economist, a position he has held for the entire period since then. In particular, Ulrich Kohli has been responsible for the SNB’s international affairs. He has been in close contact with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). In addition, he has represented the SNB at high-level conferences and at national and international meetings. At the same time, he has continued his academic research, as can be seen from his list of publications. Ulrich Kohli is a member of the SNB Enlarged Governing Board, and as Chief Economist has been actively involved in the quarterly monetary policy assessments conducted by the Governing Board. The Governing Board would like to thank Ulrich Kohli for everything he has done for the SNB, and to take this opportunity today of wishing him all the best for the future.
