June 04, 2012, The 4G pilot project, which has been running since December 2011 in seven tourist regions and 11 Swisscom Shops, is a total success. Thanks also to the mobile radio frequencies that it successfully acquired in the auction in February 2012, Swisscom is now in an optimum position to equip the network with cutting edge 4G technology and provide an ultra high speed mobile customer experience as early as the end of 2012 not only in these tourist areas, but also in twelve towns and cities. Swisscom will begin to roll out the technology across the country in 2013.

From the beginning of December 2011 until Easter, an average of 210 customers a week tested the new 4G mobile communications technology in the tourist regions and were able to benefit from mobile speeds of up to 100 Mbps. Sending emails and surfing the Internet were the focus of these tests. A survey showed that 97 percent of the pilot customers would recommend 4G.

Swisscom had planned to continue the first pilot phase until mid 2012. Now the project is to be extended by the addition of parts of Berne and Zurich, continued until the end of the year and then flow seamlessly into the introduction of 4G on the Swisscom mobile network. Customers gain access to the ultra high speed network as a pilot offer for CHF 19 per week or CHF 60 per month. The offer is available in the Swisscom Shops.

Over the next five years Swisscom will invest close to CHF 1.5 billion in the mobile network of the future and by so doing fulfil the expectations confirmed in a number of tests by its award of the rating "best network". This amount is in line with the previously communicated total investment. Swisscom will provide 4G in twelve Swiss towns and cities from December 2012, with the nationwide rollout getting under way as early as 2013. This will mark a new age in the mobile Internet, offering the possibility of fast online gaming, video conferencing, very high quality TV, the ability to upload photos within seconds and even faster surfing.
