May 31, 2010, In 2009, some 11,600 bankruptcy proceedings were opened in Switzerland against legal and
natural persons. That is 8% more than in the previous year. At the same time, the number
of ordinary and summary proceedings rose by 4%. The resulting financial losses, in
contrast, were 12% lower than in 2008. In addition, 2.5 million formal notices to pay
were issued, just over 2% more than in the previous year. These are the main results of
the debt collection and bankruptcy statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
