Shared use of public spaces
A central element of the concept: the cities receive one-third of the screen time for their own content. This enables them to broadcast cultural announcements, political information, and official notices directly via the digital displays — a clear added value for the population.
In Olten, 16 digital City ePanels are now available to advertisers, and in Solothurn, six. The installations in Olten were manufactured in a special color tone that blends seamlessly into the cityscape.
Warning and information function in emergencies
Particularly important is the new emergency override system. In exceptional events — such as floods, fires, or missing-person cases — authorities can immediately switch all screens to display warning and information messages. This is made possible by APG|SGA’s CMS, which the cities can use directly.
Connecting digitalization, transportation, and public safety
The expansion illustrates how modern cities can combine digital communication, the advertising industry, and public safety. At the same time, new premium locations are being created for companies wishing to reach regional audiences with digital out-of-home advertising.
The editorial team of HELP.ch and Swiss-Press.com regularly covers these developments and evaluates relevant projects in advertising, communication, and urban development. The example of Olten/Solothurn demonstrates how commercial use and public benefit can be harmoniously combined.
