March 22, 2012, Acino further expands its business in global emerging markets under the «Acino Switzerland» brand by successfully in-licensing an intravenous iron therapy product from EMP Pharma GmbH.

Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, a red blood cell protein responsible for the transport of oxygen throughout the body. Iron deficiency is the primary cause of anemia, the most common blood disorder characterized by a low blood cell count. The iron sucrose injection product (originator product Venofer®) is indicated to replenish iron in patients suffering from iron deficiency anemia and chronic kidney disease thereby supporting the formation of red blood cells.

Worldwide sales of parenteral iron products increased year-on-year at a rate of 13% to an annual turnover of USD 1.1 billion. Sales in Asia and Africa, which includes key target markets for Acino, amounted to USD 283 million and showed a significantly stronger growth of 50% (all figures MAT 09/2011). Iron sucrose is one of the most widely prescribed intravenous iron preparations to treat iron deficiency anemia.

Manuel Heim, Head of Global Marketing at Acino Pharma Ltd., added: “This first-line iron replacement product ideally complements our hospital product portfolio and addresses a wide-spread public health problem in many of Acino’s target markets. With our strategy of providing Swiss quality products under our brand «Acino Switzerland» and a strong local presence, we are well positioned to participate in the high growth of this product in emerging economies.”
